The Diwali Festival of Lights is celebrated by Indian communities across Aotearoa New Zealand each October and November, with major public events in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other centres that open the celebration of light to all New Zealanders. One of Hinduism's most important festivals, Diwali marks the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil — themes that resonate far beyond any single religious or cultural tradition.

New Zealand's Indian community is one of the fastest-growing in the country, bringing with it the rich cultural traditions, food, music and arts of the subcontinent. The public Diwali celebrations reflect the generosity and openness of this community — sharing one of their most joyful festivals with their neighbours and fellow New Zealanders in events that feature traditional performance, spectacular lighting, incredible food and the warmth of a community celebration at its most festive.

For New Zealanders of all backgrounds, Diwali offers an annual opportunity to engage with one of the world's great cultural celebrations in their own cities and towns. The lights, the food, the colour and the music of Diwali are a genuine gift from New Zealand's Indian communities to the wider country — a celebration that enriches the cultural life of Aotearoa and reminds us of the beauty that diversity brings.
