The New Zealand Fringe Festival is the country's largest open-access arts festival, held annually in Wellington over three weeks in February and March. Open to any artist who registers, it transforms the capital into a city of performance — filling theatres, bars, galleries, warehouses and unexpected spaces with theatre, comedy, music, dance, circus, spoken word and experimental work that ranges from student productions to professional touring shows.

The fringe model is democratic by design — there is no selection committee, no curatorial gatekeeping, just an open invitation to make work and find an audience. The result is a programme of extraordinary diversity and energy, where the most challenging and experimental work sits alongside accessible comedy and family shows, and where the unexpected discovery is always just around the corner. For artists, it is one of the most important platforms in New Zealand — a chance to test new work, build audiences and be part of a community of creative risk-takers.

For audiences, the New Zealand Fringe is one of the most exciting times of year to be in Wellington. The density of events, the variety of experiences and the genuine sense that anything could happen in any venue on any night makes it a festival that rewards curiosity and adventurousness. For visitors to the capital in late summer, it is one of the best possible introductions to Wellington's creative culture.
