Te Matatini is the premier national kapa haka festival of Aotearoa New Zealand and is widely recognised as the largest celebration of traditional Māori performing arts excellence in the world. Held every two years, it brings together top groups from across Aotearoa and Ahitereiria to compete at the highest level, while also celebrating te reo Māori, tikanga, whānau connection, and the living strength of kapa haka.
The 2025 festival, Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga, was hosted in Ngāmotu New Plymouth at Pukekura / Bowl of Brooklands from 25 February to 1 March 2025. Over five days, dozens of qualifying rōpū took the stage before a large in-person audience and a nationwide broadcast audience, making it one of the most significant cultural events on the New Zealand calendar.
For many visitors, Te Matatini is more than a competition. It is a powerful gathering of iwi, hapū, performers, supporters and communities, where excellence in haka, waiata, mōteatea and performance sits alongside pride in identity, intergenerational learning and cultural renewal. Attending Te Matatini offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience Māori performing arts at their most prestigious and inspiring.
